1. Consider your University Options
Unlike some fields that do not necessarily require a degree, it is impossible to become an architect without higher education. Many colleges and universities offer such degrees, but be warned - it’s no walk in the park. Make sure you fulfill the criteria of the universities you are looking into - be it primary education or internships and summer jobs related to architecture.
2. Be prepared to study hard
When it comes to studying, architecture is slightly different from the norm. Entering the architecture field - much less excelling in it - will need a life-long commitment to learning. This field doesn’t follow a generic grading system, so it may take time to adjust to it and figure out precisely what is being asked of you. The only thing more important than your grades is the portfolio and skills you build throughout your degree.
3. Hone your math skills
It’s a common misconception that architecture requires strong math skills. However, universities think otherwise. Although you may only use basic equations in your professional career, universities still require a stronger level. Being poor at math may hurt your chances of entering a university for architecture.
4. Be creative
Much like the mathematics part of the degree, there is no need for incredible drawing skills to excel in architecture. On the other hand, what you do need is the ability to solve problems creatively. As an architect, you are hired to solve the client’s problem by designing the building - make sure you develop the skills.
5. It may be tedious
The dream of becoming an architect may seem like a glamorous one. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as it may seem. All architecture is rooted in meticulous and tedious details. Every single angle and minuscule measurement come into play in the final product. As an architect, you may not even get to enjoy the bigger picture.
6. Land an internship
As discussed earlier, one of the essential experiences of architecture studies is landing an internship. The more exposure you get as a student, the more you’ll be able to learn. A university professor’s knowledge can only take you so far - you need to go the extra mile yourself.
7. Be passionate
Being good at math and design isn’t enough to get you through the entirety of your architecture studies. Surviving through the degree without any enjoyment or passion is the last thing you want. Only through your passion for the field will you truly manage innovations and creativity in your design.
